MUSIC ON PORTLAND

The Isle of Portland is very fortunate in having a thriving music scene, and to judge by the views expressed by visitors to the Island, it is one of the best and most active around the South Coast. The Portland Singers, a balanced choir of some forty voices, meets every Friday evening in the Easton Methodist Hall and gives regular concerts. Most Saturday nights there are four or five bands appearing around the local pubs and in addition the Social and Workingmen’s Clubs put on regular entertainment.
This music ranges from Country and Western, Rock and Pop and Blues Bands. Mid week there are Folk Meetings where guest singers are always welcome to “have a go” and there are regular Line Dance and “Country” evenings.

The musicians of Portland are not only fine performers, some of them are also composers, writing songs about Portland. These are well worth searching out – Portland well deserves its title “Island of Inspiration”

The Portland Singers

The choir was formed in the early 1980’s under the musical direction of Mr Alan Upward, and is a mixed choir of some forty or so voices. They sing a wide variety of music, from Bach to Beatles, and rehearsals take place at the Easton Methodist Hall on Friday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.15pm. New recruits to the choir are always most welcome, and you don’t need to be a Lesley Garrett or a Pavarottii to join!

Under the musical director, Mr Albert Davies, the choir usually provides a programme of Easter Choral music, a Summer concert, “Last Night of the Proms” style Autumn concert(s), and a Christmas Carol concert. On some occasions they combine with the Weymouth Concert Brass Band and The Casterbridge Male Voice Choir, and over the years have raised considerable monies for local and national charities.

If you would like to join The Portland singers, please feel free to come along on a Friday evening when you will be made most welcome.
