Literature

Portland has been a source of inspiration to writers such as Thomas Hardy and A. E. Houseman. George Davy, "Skylark" Durston and Bob Woollage, known as The Portland Poets all born and bred on the Island have created a rich legacy of poetry celebrating the Island life and traditions

SEA MISTS
Out of the sea they creep,
Whirling in shadowy form,
Twisting and darting to and fro,
Silent, grasping, creeping,
On gentle eddies rise,

Seeking the depths and height
Blotting the land from sight,
With clammy fingers reach
The spider's silvery home,
To kiss with damp beauty

Globes of water scattered, dripping
On tree and flower closed.
Ships sound mournful warning
As they grope their way home,
And then the sun's rays peep,
Suddenly it runs away
On cloud and wind, forever.
