Fine Art

Portland is home to a thriving community of artists and crafts people.
A significant number of nationally and internationally known artists who's work is highly sought after, live and work on the Island..
There are two exhibition galleries on Portland and the annual exhibitions at the St. George's Centre show the high quality work in all media, inspired by the Island's architecture, flora, fauna, and ever changing vistas. Had it been easier to reach the Island in the nineteenth century, there is little doubt that it would have rivaled Newlyn and St Ives.

Another aspect of artistic expression can be seen in Tout Quarry Sculpture Park. This once busy and productive quarry is now dedicated to the skill of the sculpture and is becoming nationally and internationally known as a place where established and budding sculptors can demonstrate their skills. It is accessible throughout the year and provides a unique environment in which to view the works of sculptors from all over the world.

Dorset Art Weeks features local artists:

Suzanne Yates & June Lander two contemporary painters with a common love of Portland
Margaret Somerville painter who uses many the sea as her main source of inspiration
Judith Frost ; drawings using stone dust
Liz Wright Painting and prints capturing the spirit and essence of Portland

Ruth Williams Paintings of varied figurative works plus interiors, landscapes & seascapes using Gouache, oils and watercolours.
