Community Groups |
In September 1999 the Community Development Worker carried out an Appraisal of Portland. Portland was split into ten areas and residents completed a questionnaire about their area. As a result there are now seven community groups on Portland. The groups are made up of people living and working in the area. They look at local issues that have included speeding, parking and planning, and they work closely with the local authorities on these issues. The main benefit of a community group is that it can apply for funding that the statutory agencies cannot access, thereby having the ability to make a real difference to in their area. Events can be organised and whether it is a clear up day or a local fete everyone can become involved and work positively in partnership for their village. |

Island Volunteers for You (IVY) |
is Portland’s volunteer bureau. It’s main functions are to provide a ‘one stop’ information and advisory service for the recruitment of volunteers, promoting a very wide range of volunteering opportunities and to develop new projects to enhance the quality of life for those in need of community support and facilities on Portland. Under the direction of the IVY Co-ordinator at it’s newly acquired premises at Easton, it has developed and supported a range of fifty projects as diverse as befriending, gardening, dolphin watch, a hospital trolley service and the Portland Community Minibus. It has also helped to connect over six hundred people with the world of volunteering. For more information or to make a donation, please contact IVY at |
