Portland's past is long and varied.
From the visits of the Phoenicians and Romans,
its brush with the Spanish Armada,
its role in the Civil and Napoleonic wars,
the development of the maritime and stone industries, �
to the present day,
Portland has played a significant part in the history of the nation.

The following pages will, we believe, give the reader a glimpse of the many influences that have given the Island its unique, varied, and fascinating character.
