There has been a boxing club on the Island since 1984. The club closed for a while after the scout hut at which the club met burnt down with all the equipment being lost in the fire. The club reformed in the late 90~s and after borrowing space for a few years in various halls moved to its present location at the former library in East Street I have been the full-time coach now for two years and part time coach for a while before that. I am a former amateur boxer too and I represented Portland ABC with the highlight of my career being picked to represent the Western Counties as a support boxer at the quarter-final stage of the National Senior Championships. The club runs at present on two nights a week a Monday and Wednesday evenings with juniors from 6-7pm and senior boxers 7 pm onwards. Sunday mornings we also train for squad members only, I hope to increase the opening times but as I'm the only coach at present work does not allow. At present I take the juniors from l0 years old. I hope to start a group for under 10's soon and also start a girls only session We may be only a small club but over the years it has produced some fine boxers with some becoming Western Counties Champions. This year in fact saw a feat never achieved before with a young boxer, Levi Moore reaching the final of the National Cadet Championships at Crystal Palace in London. Two of the senior boxers were also in the Senior Championships this year.
