Sailing and other Water Sports

Portland Harbour provides an ideal environment for all types of water sports.
Sheltered from the west by Chesil Bank, but with a brisk steady breeze it is ideal for windsurfing and fast dinghy sailing. It is only in the depths of winter when the southwesterly winds are at gale force that the harbour is devoid of this type of activity.
Many world class events are held in the harbour, and the Royal Yachting Association is constructing of a "Centre of excellence" for training current and prospective Olympic contenders. This will provide training, accommodation and refreshment , facilities along with toilets , showers and locker rooms.

Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy has recently
moved onto Osprey Quay, the now redundant Royal Naval Air Station.
The Academy site covers approximately seven acres, and launches
directly into the sheltered water of Portland Harbour
(approximately 4 sq. miles). Training is given at all levels of competence from Olympic standard to school children.

Immediately outside the harbour magnificent sailing is found
in the famous waters of Weymouth Bay.

The Academy is open all year round, providing a top class facility for all sailing events.
