Visitor’s Centres

The Portland Bill Lighthouse and Visitors Centre is a partnership between the Crown Estate, Trinity House, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, and other organisations which have helped fund the displays and fitting out of the Visitor and Tourist Information Centre.

Within the visitors Centre are displays covering all aspects of Portland and leaflets to help you enjoy your visit to the Island.

Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months
( A height restriction applies to young visitors who must be a minimum of 1,1 metres high.)

Adjacent to the Lighthouse are facilities for refreshment, car parking, and toilets. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular coastline and views. After dark the four main beams from the light silently sweep the horizon through approximately 270 degrees warning of the treacherous coastline and the dangers of the Shambles Bank.

The Chesil Beach Centre

This centre situated in the car park behind Chesil Bank, provides a wealth of information on coastal features and wildlife. The formation of the Chesil Bank is shown with a three dimensional model accompanied by an audio presentation. The centre of the building has a large painting depicting the area and its wildlife
There is also a stone replica of a quarry which illustrates the Island’s geology and history
Information can be obtained via a touch screen computer and other interactive devices
The Warden and his team of helpers are on hand to welcome visitors, provide film of local marine life, birdcalls etc. and give information in general.

A Bulletin board offers information on local weather, safety and current events. Retail unit specialising in local history and wildlife, tide time tables etc.

The Chesil Beach Centre is open from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm during April to September and 10.00 am to 4.00 pm during October to March.


Entry to the Centre is free. Freshly prepared hot food, sandwiches, ice creams and drink are available from the Tea Cabin in the Centre. The Centre has toilets and a pay phone.
