Portland has a diverse industry base, from large engineering to a multitude of small outlets.
Several business areas have been created with custom built units to house the various activities.
The largest of the “Parks” is “Southwell Business Park” . This building originally housed the Ministry of Defence Underwater Weapons Research Establishment. When the M.o. D. re-located in Bristol, the site was sold for commercial use. It now houses 100 businesses, employing over 400 people.

Castle Engineering and Portland Engineering are also major players on the Island
Castle Engineering are situated very close to Pennsylvania Castle ,are both general and marine engineers. Their marine engineering is situated in Portland Port.

Portland Engineering in Wide Street are precision engineers specialising in components for the motor industry.

On the Osprey Quay site Luhrs Marine employ local craftsmen to build luxury yachts. This site is the European headquarters of Hunter Marine of whom they are a subsiduary.

“Inmosthay” and “Tradecroft”, both small business parks, house a variety of outlets ranging from re-constituted stone , motor repairs, and light engineering ,to the Royal Mail sorting office.

Portland also has a major Ford service and dealership in Chesil Beach Motor
s and a large shellfish handler in Copines, much of their produce, spider crabs , is exported to Spain.

Portland Port have taken over the RN Naval Base at Castletown, along with the management of Portland Harbour. They provide a range of services from Surveying to maintenance and repair.

Also within the Port is Portland Bunkers international Ltd This company provides bunkering facilities for shipping using the English Channel, and is ideally situated half way between Dover and Falmouth. It has made use of the bunkering facilities left by the Royal Navy, and benefits from Portland’s large and well protected harbour which allows bunkering in all weathers.
